Description
Wide Angle Joint WA Series
High-torque universal joints engineered for extreme articulation angles — purpose-built for UK and European agricultural and industrial driveline applications.
What Is a Wide Angle Joint and Why Does It Matter?
A wide angle joint — commonly referred to as a WA joint or wide-angle universal joint — is a specialised driveline coupling designed to transmit torque reliably at operating angles that would cause a standard Cardan joint to vibrate, wear prematurely, or fail outright. Where conventional universal joints top out at roughly 15–20°, the Ever-Power WA Series wide angle joint accommodates continuous working angles up to 80°, making it indispensable in front-mounted implements, self-propelled forage harvesters, vegetable transplanters, and articulated tractor linkages across UK farms and estates. The geometry uses a double-cross yoke mechanism that distributes load symmetrically across both cross kits simultaneously, dramatically reducing the velocity fluctuation — the so-called “second-order irregularity” — that accelerates drivetrain wear in high-angle applications. British operators running front PTO implements on mixed terrain have long recognised that standard PTO shafts simply cannot cope with the steering and terrain-induced articulation angles at the front hitch; a purpose-engineered wide angle joint is the engineered solution rather than a workaround. The WA Series is available in seven frame sizes (2WA through 42WA) to span the torque envelope from compact horticultural tractors right up to high-output arable machinery common on East Anglian cereal farms and Yorkshire mixed enterprises.

Engineering Advantages of the WA Series
Six reasons UK machinery dealers and fleet managers specify Ever-Power wide angle joints
Extreme Articulation Range
The double-cross geometry permits continuous operation at working angles of up to 80°, covering every front-hitch and articulated implement scenario encountered in UK farming practice — from narrow strip tillage to wide-span mowing.
Forged Alloy Steel Construction
Yoke bodies are drop-forged from 20CrMnTi alloy steel, case-hardened and shot-peened to achieve surface hardness of 58–62 HRC. This combination ensures the wide angle joint withstands shock loading during implement engagement on wet UK clay soils.
Sealed Needle Roller Crosses
Full-complement needle roller cross kits feature nitrile lip seals as standard. Grease retention is substantially improved compared to open-bearing designs, making re-greasing intervals achievable at every 50-hour service — practical for busy UK contractors.
Interchangeable Yoke Options
Each size in the WA range is offered with B, C, D, E and G yoke bore configurations (plain, keyway, and splined variants) so the wide angle joint integrates directly with tractor PTO splines conforming to ASAE/ISO standards common across UK and European tractor fleets.
Low Velocity Irregularity
The opposed double-cross arrangement mathematically cancels the angular velocity fluctuations inherent in a single Hooke’s joint. The result is smoother power delivery through the implement gearbox, reducing fatigue damage to downstream components and vibration felt at the tractor cab.
Snap-Ring Retained Assembly
External snap-ring retention on all cross bearing cups enables field replacement without specialist tooling. A UK operator can swap a worn cross kit roadside during harvest with a standard socket set, minimising downtime — a feature frequently cited by UK farm machinery dealers as a key selling point.

How It Works, What It’s Made From, and Where It’s Used
Operating Principle
The wide angle joint operates on an opposed double-Hooke principle: two cross joints are arranged in tandem within a single compact housing, their phase angles set 90° apart. This phasing relationship means that as one cross decelerates, the other accelerates by an equal and opposite amount, producing a net output velocity that remains constant — a property called “homokinetic through cancellation.” Unlike a true constant-velocity joint which achieves this through ball-groove geometry, the WA joint achieves it through symmetry of mass and phasing, which allows a simpler, more robust construction suitable for high-torque agricultural drivelines where contamination, shock loading, and field repair are everyday realities. The grease nipples are positioned for easy access even with guard shrouds fitted, which matters during a busy harvest season in the Lincolnshire fens or on a Welsh hill farm.
Material Specification
Yoke forgings are produced from 20CrMnTi alloy steel — a low-alloy chromium-manganese-titanium grade selected specifically for its combination of high case-hardenability and tough core strength. After rough machining, forgings are carburised to a case depth of 0.8–1.2 mm, quenched, and tempered, achieving a surface hardness in the 58–62 HRC range while retaining a core hardness of 30–38 HRC. The needle roller cross kits use full-complement DIN-standard needle bearings running in ground-bore cups. Seals are dual-lip nitrile (NBR70) rated to -40°C to +120°C, compatible with NLGI 2 lithium-complex or EP grease, which covers the full range of UK ambient temperatures in all seasons.
Typical Application Scenarios
In the UK market, the WA Series wide angle joint is most commonly specified for front-mounted mowers and mulchers on CLAAS, John Deere, and New Holland tractors where the front PTO turns through large angles during headland turns. It is equally at home driving vegetable transplanters on the sandy soils of Norfolk and Bedfordshire, where high steering angles are unavoidable in bed-following. Compact loader tractors used in Scottish horticulture and Welsh livestock operations frequently need wide angle joints on hydraulic pump drives and PTO-powered implements, where the short wheelbase produces extreme articulation. Industrial applications include concrete mixer drives, mobile conveyor pivots, and truck-mounted spreading equipment seen throughout UK road maintenance contracting.

Customer Success Stories
Real-world performance of the WA Series wide angle joint across UK sectors
Lincolnshire Arable Contractor — Front Mower Fleet Overhaul
A Lincolnshire-based agricultural contracting business operating twelve tractors with front-mounted disc mowers was experiencing recurring wide angle joint failures at an average of 180 operating hours per joint from their previous supplier. The joints were failing at the cross kit, attributable to inadequate case depth and inconsistent seal retention. After switching to Ever-Power 6WA.01 and 8WA.01 series joints across the fleet in spring 2024, the operator completed the full mowing season — approximately 340 hours per tractor — without a single in-field joint failure. The sealed needle roller design and improved grease retention were credited by the fleet manager as the decisive difference. Total maintenance cost per tractor dropped by an estimated 38% over the season, and field downtime during the critical June–July mowing window was eliminated. The contractor subsequently placed a standing order for the full 12-machine fleet refresh each spring.

340hr+ service life
“We run four front-hitch vegetable transplanters on sandy Bedfordshire soils, and the turning angles are severe. The 4WA.01 joints have now done two full seasons without needing a cross kit replacement. That’s a first for us — our previous setup needed replacing every season.”
· Production Horticulture, Bedfordshire, England
“Ordered 8WA.01 joints for our mobile crushing plant’s conveyor pivot drives. Lead time from Ever-Power was eight days to our Yorkshire depot, and the dimensional fit was exactly as drawn. The customer engineering support team answered our technical questions the same day — genuinely impressive.”
· Plant Hire & Crushing, Yorkshire, England
“We supply agricultural machinery spare parts across Scotland and stocked up on the 2WA and 4WA series for compact tractor customers. Sales have been strong, returns have been zero. Ever-Power provide the dimensional certificates and material compliance docs we need for our trade customers without us having to chase.”
