A star yoke — sometimes referred to as a spider yoke or cross yoke — forms the connecting interface between the universal joint cross (spider) and the main shaft tube within a PTO drive shaft assembly. The component’s four-lug geometry distributes rotational forces evenly around the joint centre, which is what makes it so central to smooth, vibration-free power transfer. When a star yoke wears prematurely or is manufactured to loose tolerances, the entire drivetrain suffers: bearing seats become oval, the spider cross tilts under load, and driveline vibration escalates rapidly. Material Composition & Working Principle

The star yoke operates on the principle of rigid moment transfer: it clamps mechanically around the outer diameter of the PTO shaft tube (or slides over a splined stub) while its four lug arms present precision-bored cup seats to the bearing needles of the spider cross. As the driveshaft rotates, the yoke transmits torque through the spider cross to the mating yoke at the other end of the universal joint, allowing angular misalignment between tractor and implement — typically up to 15° to 25° depending on series — without interrupting power flow. The star geometry ensures that the torque load path divides equally between four bearing cups, keeping unit bearing pressure within safe limits even at rated torque.

Material-wise, the body is forged from 20CrMnTi or equivalent low-alloy case-hardening steel. Post-forging, components undergo carburising at 920°C, quenching, and low-temperature tempering to achieve a surface hardness of 58–62 HRC with a core hardness of 30–42 HRC. This dual-hardness profile is what allows the star yoke to handle shock torque spikes — such as those generated when a rotary mower strikes a concealed stone — without yielding or fracturing.

Dimensional quality is verified through CMM (coordinate measuring machine) inspection of bearing seat diameters, lug parallelism, and bore run-out. Each production batch includes hardness testing and magnetic particle inspection to detect sub-surface cracks before parts leave the factory.
