Shock Loads & The “Shear Pin” Strategy
When excavating hard rock or compacting clay in the English Channel, cutterheads or dredging pump impellers frequently experience momentary blockages. This generates an “impact coefficient” equivalent to 2.5 to 3.0 times the rated torque.
Standard universal joints transmit this impact directly to the pinion gear in the gearbox. To prevent catastrophic gearbox failure, we integrate the shear pin coupling directly into the universal joint flange.
- The Logic: The shaft is designed to withstand 555 kNm (Shock Load). The gearbox fails at 400 kNm. The shear pins are calibrated to snap cleanly at 210 kNm.
- The Benefit: Replacing a set of calibrated pins takes 20 minutes and costs under £100. Replacing a marine gearbox pinion takes 6 weeks and costs over £50,000.
Quick Release for Dredge Pumps
Pump maintenance is frequent on a working dredger. Traditional flanged connections require removing 16-24 rusted bolts in a cramped hull. Our Quick Release (QR) Flange Design utilizes a split-face geometry. By loosening just four tension bolts, the drive shaft retracts 15mm, allowing the entire assembly to be lifted clear without disturbing the pump or gearbox alignment.
