What Is a Friction Torque Limiter?
A friction torque limiter is a mechanical safety device installed between a tractor PTO output shaft and an implement gearbox or driveline. When the transmitted torque exceeds a pre-set threshold — caused by ground obstructions, sudden blockages, or shock loads — the friction torque limiter slips automatically, cutting the mechanical power path and preventing catastrophic damage to the implement, gearbox, or the tractor itself. Unlike shear-bolt types, a friction torque limiter re-engages seamlessly without stopping work to replace components, delivering genuine productivity savings across the whole operating season.
The EP Friction Torque Limiter is purpose-designed for heavy-duty agricultural and light industrial PTO driveline applications across the United Kingdom. Whether you run mowers, wood chippers, rotary tillers, spreaders, or post-hole diggers, this device guards your investment at the point where overload stress is most intense. With a compact, flanged design and a broad selection of spline profiles, it integrates directly into standard PTO shaft assemblies without modification, making it a practical choice for British farming contractors, machinery dealers, and OEM implement manufacturers alike.
Why Choose the EP Friction Torque Limiter?
How the Friction Torque Limiter Works
Inside the EP Friction Torque Limiter, a pair of high-friction linings (Qty. 2) are clamped between a precision-machined pressure plate and an internal disc by eight complete bolt-and-spring assemblies. The spring pre-load determines the slip torque threshold. Under normal operating conditions, the clamping force generated by the springs is sufficient to transmit the full rated torque through the assembly. When the load spikes beyond the set value, the friction surfaces slip relative to each other, absorbing energy as heat rather than transmitting destructive force into the shaft and gearbox.
The flanged yoke on one side connects directly to the PTO drive shaft, while the hub — locked by a taper pin and nut assembly — attaches to the implement input shaft. A plain bushing supports the internal disc and maintains concentric alignment under dynamic loads, which is critical for extending bearing life in the downstream gearbox. Because the entire assembly is contained within a compact flanged envelope, it does not add significant length to the PTO shaft system and causes no imbalance issues even at higher PTO speeds.
The friction lining material is selected for a consistent coefficient of friction across a wide temperature range, ensuring that the actual slip torque remains close to the factory-set value whether the limiter engages on a cold morning in February or during an intensive summer harvest season. This predictability is what separates the EP design from less refined alternatives on the UK aftermarket.

Where Is the Friction Torque Limiter Used?
British farmers and contractors encounter enormously varied ground conditions — from the heavy clay soils of the East Midlands to the stony uplands of Scotland — and the implements working those fields face equally varied shock loads. The friction torque limiter has proven indispensable across a wide range of PTO-driven machinery categories. Rotary mowers, flail mulchers, and verge cutters benefit enormously because blade strikes against concealed rocks or fence posts can generate torque spikes several times the nominal rated value in under one millisecond. Without overload protection, these spikes travel directly back through the PTO shaft and destroy the mower gearbox.

Customer Success Story
Arable Contractor Reduces Implement Repair Costs by 60% After Switching to EP Friction Torque Limiters
A large arable contracting business operating across Lincolnshire and South Yorkshire had experienced repeated gearbox failures on their fleet of six flail mulchers. Each failure cost between £800 and £2,200 in parts and downtime during the busy hedge-cutting season. After fitting EP 6FF2 friction torque limiters across all six machines, the business went through an entire 14-week season without a single gearbox failure. The self-resetting behaviour was specifically highlighted as a major operational gain — operators no longer needed to exit the tractor cab to replace shear bolts after hitting debris. Total annual implement repair costs fell by approximately 60%, and the investment in friction torque limiters was recovered within the first season.
What Our Customers Say
“We fitted the 5FF2 series on our PTO wood chipper after a jaw coupling failure put us out for two weeks. The EP unit has been faultless for three seasons now. Absolutely no issues.”
“Ordered a batch of 4FF1D units for our rotary tiller range. Lead time was reasonable, packaging was solid, and the spline fit was spot-on first time. Will be ordering again.”
“Very happy with the 7FF2C torque limiter on our post-hole digger. It has saved the auger gearbox twice already this year on our Derbyshire estate. Good value for professional use.”
Our Manufacturing Facility & Custom Engineering
Every EP Friction Torque Limiter is produced in our purpose-built manufacturing facility, equipped with CNC turning centres, precision grinding lines, and automated friction lining bonding stations. Our quality control team inspects all torque-setting spring packs and performs sampling torque-slip verification to ensure that each batch meets the published torque tolerance band before dispatch. The factory operates under ISO 9001:2015 quality management procedures, and documentation is available for customers requiring material test certificates or dimensional inspection reports for OEM fitment programmes.
We place particular emphasis on our product customisation capability. If your implement requires a torque limiter that falls between standard series — or needs a non-standard spline, a modified flange bolt circle, or a specific surface coating for corrosive environments — our engineering team can deliver a bespoke solution. Custom orders typically require a drawing confirmation and a minimum batch quantity that we agree with each customer individually. UK agricultural machinery manufacturers and OEM suppliers are welcome to contact us to discuss private-label supply and tooling amortisation arrangements.
Complete PTO Drive Shaft Range
The friction torque limiter is designed to work within a complete driveline system. Our full PTO drive shaft programme covers four core series, each engineered for distinct application demands across the UK agricultural and industrial machinery market. Selecting the correct shaft series alongside the appropriate torque limiter ensures that the entire driveline is rated consistently, avoiding mismatched weak points.
